Listerine: A Good Lice Treatment?

When we think about the most popular treatments for head lice, obviously the first idea that comes to mind is ClearLice; our line of products has been proven to get rid of lice and nits within 24 hours without any of the risks typically associated with other head lice products that are manufactured with dangerous pesticides and harmful chemicals. Unfortunately, not everyone is yet aware of the effectiveness of ClearLice natural lice products and tend to rely on other, home remedies when it comes to treating a head lice infestation.
Believe us, when we say that we have heard about some pretty unconventional methods that aren’t always as effective as they promise to be. When we talked to a few parents about some head lice home remedies or treatments they have used for head lice infestations, one dad mentioned that when he was a kid, his mother would use a whole jar of mayonnaise on his head and cover it with a shower cap for a few hours… and while mayonnaise and other fats do wonders for your hair, it won’t actually do anything to get rid of lice.
Head Lice Home Remedies
A growing trend amongst people looking to get rid of lice using home remedies is to treat the head lice problem using Listerine or other brands of mouthwash. And while we find it very difficult to come up with a valid reason for thinking Listerine is a valid treatment, advocates of this remedy claim that Listerine is a cheap, effective way of getting rid of lice and nits. Listerine contains 27% alcohol as well as other natural ingredients and herbs like eucalyptus, peppermint and wintergreen oil.
Unfortunately, as far as effectiveness goes, Listerine is not that great. In fact, patients who have used this lice home remedy claim that while it does a good job when it comes to removing superficial lice from the head, hair and scalp, Listerine cannot and will not remove lice that are hiding in the lower layers of hair. Listerine is also very inefficient when it comes to removing nits from the hair and most likely you will end up having to manually remove most of the nits from the head; a process that is not only very time-consuming but frustrating as well.
The Side Effects of Listerine for Lice Removal
Another thing that we need to consider when it comes to using mouthwash as a home remedy for head lice is the fact that there are a large number of side effects associated with Listerine and this is not a product that should be used regularly by everyone; especially children. In fact, a class-action lawsuit made against the Johnson & Johnson Company in Australia, forced the Australian Supreme Court to order a study which determined that mouthwashes high in alcohol like the Listerine brand, can present a significant risk factor for oral cancer, comparable to the damage done by regularly smoking cigarettes or chewing smokeless tobacco
Of course, it would be silly to assume that we could get cancer after using mouthwash once or twice to treat a head lice infestation, but we need to consider the fact that the ingredients used in the manufacturing of this product can be extremely harmful for the skin on our scalp and our hair follicles. Especially those who have very delicate skin or skin that gets easily irritated; as we know, the large concentration of alcohol found in Listerine, can really create some problems for people with sensitive skin such as irritation, swelling, scarring and redness. Considering these potential symptoms and the fact that Listerine is not completely effective in removing head lice and nits, it is easy to see why using Listerine as a head lice remedy may not be the best choice.
ClearLice has been around for almost 8 years and we have heard and witnessed several lice remedies that people try when dealing with a head infestation. As of today we have not found anything that comes even close to the effectiveness and safeness of ClearLice natural lice products. If you or your children are suffering from a head lice infestation, we strongly advise against using Listerine or other brands of mouthwash as a home remedy. Not only can this be potentially harmful, it is not effective in treating lice and nits.
